Pan-American (Conn) 1927 Pads
These pads were taken from a Pan-American (Conn) 1927 silver-plated C-Melody Sax.
I believe the white leather pads are original to the horn.
I do not know if the are cow-hide, calf-skin, goat-skin or what.
As you can see, the felt is open in the back. Modern pads have carboard backing.
There are also 5 tan pads that I believe are replacement pads that were installed later.
Most of these also have open felt backs, but one has a carboard back.
The one with the cardboard back has a "51" on the cardboard which indicates 51/32 inch diameter.
I would love modern manufacturers to put the size on the padback
The pads were put in using shellac. The white pads were seemingly put in using shellac very sparingly.
The technician that put in the replacement pads used a lot more shellac.
I am guessing that all these pads are hand-made or at least hand-sewn in some factory.
The white pads have a small single stitch in the middle holding the leather to the felt.
The tan pads have a much larger single stitch.
Not sure if I want to guess what the working conditions were like.
