Mouthpiece Tip Gauge

This is the Mouthpiece Tip Gauge I use for measuring and verifying the size of mouthpiece tip openings.
I prefer this gauge because it has a "stop" against which the tip of the mouthpiece goes. This means I consistently get the same reading every time.
I typically calibrate this gauge with Babbitt mouthpiece (modern Otto Link, Meyer, etc.) Once calibrated, it consistently and reliably gets measurements that correspond to the Babbitt facing charts. Usually, they are within +/- 0.002 inches (plus or minus two thousandth of an inch).
In contrast, when I use this gauge to measure Berg Larsen mouthpieces, the measurement may vary +/- 0.010 inches (plus or minus one hundredth of an inch) from what is stamped on the mouthpiece...occasionally more.

Since there is no standard nomenclature for specifying the tip opening size and since there can be variance in mouthpieces fresh out of the factory, let alone vintage mouthpieces that may or may not have been altered...sometimes nothing will do but to measure the tip opening.
